"Change the staple." — Why we are building the staple food of the 21st century

From the web to networks, IT, DX and now AI, our living and social environment has entered a period of dizzying change. Food has become abundant. Work has been released from physical labour. Compared with people a hundred years ago, our lives are overwhelmingly easier.

And yet something strange has happened. Despite that abundance, and despite the end of physical labour, humanity has not gained happiness or health. Lifestyle-related conditions — diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, obesity — still hold us. Medical progress has delivered longevity, but it has also lengthened the period of illness; cancer, stroke and heart disease keep many people suffering for years. This is not always a "happy" situation.

Of course we hope for advances in medicine and drug development. But is it right that a person cannot live out a healthy life without depending on drugs and medical care? For three thousand years, Asia has said that medicine and food share one source. Living things are born healthy. When illness comes, there is a cause somewhere in the way we live — that is what we believe.

Modern people undeniably move too little. In an age when water came from rivers and wells, and food was cooked over bought firewood, people walked more than 20,000 steps a day on average. We cannot ask that of people today; they are too busy. But a species that once walked 20,000 steps, now moving far less while eating the same — or more — cannot digest the excess. In the East, we say that excess produces disease. And the largest part of that excess, we believe, is the staple itself: bread and noodles derived from wheat, rice, sugar, and the sweets made from them. We believe these are shortening lives and multiplying illness.

The ideal would be to live without staple grains and sugar at all. But for most people, giving up the staple at the root of their culture is painful. So we use mulberry leaf and konjac — wisdom from the East — to develop bread, noodles and rice that are high in fibre, high in plant protein and low in carbohydrate.

We believe the new staple of the 21st century can help extend healthy life expectancy, and help people live out the life they were given, in health. In an age when the web and AI spread both true and false information, we are building the Tenyo app so that each person can look at our products with their own eyes and judge for themselves.

Human beings were born to live in health, without depending on medicine, genes or drugs. When the body falters, perhaps there was a cause — and by reflecting on that, a person can grow.

Our wish is simple: that you, and the people around you, stay well. If we can make a small contribution to that, nothing would make us happier. First, we want you to feel the difference for yourself. The Tenyo app will show you the result as numbers.
